Can I like this instead of the article?

Send the article to these folks

http://www.r-word.org/r-word-jeers.aspx

And post on the article comments the PSA video "spread the word to end the word.

I would do it myself, but I don't know what article it is.

Thanks!

Meg

Here's another blog on the topic.

I can't stand it... it is one thing to call the economy retarded. It is. I has been slowed or impeded.

It is WRONG to use that word in the direction of a human being... even if that human being is yourself.

It's not funny, not even a little bit.

Let me further couch this by the use of the word nigger. Again, the word means to slow or impede something.

It is WRONG to use the word in the direction of a person, even if that person is yourself.

Writers haven't used the word nigger in a literary context in YEARS, same with the word retard.
Simply because the words have been used in a negative connotation toward people.

You don't see the medical community using the phrase "Within the Scope of Mental Niggering" ... um no. Never used.
Just because the medical community has used the phrase "Within the scope of Mental Retardation"... does not make it okay.
I get that they have used retardation as a blanket term to describe something they do not have a better diagnosis for..

Both words need to finish dying. People on the whole have never used them properly to begin with.. So, as a word-smith.
If you are not going to use the word correctly, don't use it at all. Period.

In the meantime, I'll be over there chiseling the tombstones for both words.

I was really sad to have to explain to my 10 year old this week what the word retarded meant because a child at her school said that books are retarded. I was hoping that the next generation would be the one in which the word would no longer be used.

Korin,
I have been the R word police at my high school. Everytime I hear it I speak to the person (adult or teenager) and think of you and feel grateful that what you wrote gave me the understanding and the courage to do it.
